CASE FILE VII  ยท  REPUTATION MANAGEMENT

A reputation crisis is unfolding.

When a damaging story breaks, the instinct is to react instantly. The people who come through it best do the opposite - they move deliberately. Here is the sequence.

1

Get the facts before the story does

Establish exactly what happened, what's true, what's not, and what can be verified. You cannot respond to a crisis you don't yet understand - and a wrong early statement becomes its own second story.

2

Control the first hour

Decide who speaks, through which channel, and when. Silence is a position too. Assign a single point of contact so the narrative doesn't fragment across staff, family and social media.

3

Decide whether to respond at all

Not every attack deserves oxygen. Responding can amplify a story that would otherwise fade. Weigh reach, credibility of the source, and who actually needs to hear from you.

4

Speak with one calm, human voice

If you do respond, be brief, factual and composed. Defensive or combative language becomes the headline. Address the people affected first, not the critics.

5

Fix the search results, not just the headline

Weeks later, what remains is what people find when they search your name. Ensure accurate, authoritative content ranks - your statement, legitimate coverage, your own channels.

6

Learn what made you a target

Most crises exploit an existing exposure - a leaked document, an old post, an angry insider. Close that gap so the same door can't be used twice.

A reputation crisis is survivable, but rarely alone and rarely improvised. Discreet, experienced help in the first hours - and continuous monitoring so you're never blindsided - is what turns a catastrophe into a footnote.

You don't have to handle this alone.
